The loop sequence itself was 4 seconds long and had to be re-painted and sequenced to create as seamless a loop as possible. Additional steps for color correction/balance and hue compression were performed, while (hopefully) still retaining the spirit of the scene. Specialized, custom scripts were written to make many of the necessary corrections for the stabilization process. For "modern eyes", this jumps out when presenting a loop such as this. Cell animation would commonly "jump" in the film gate as it was being photographed for print to film, causing shifting and skipping in the photographed negatives. Individual cells were hand-painted to correct scratches, dust and other artifacts from the original film. Several steps to stabilize, re-color and compress background colors to eliminate flicker were achieved. This sequence always had special meaning for me. Special nod to the original artists that worked on the film and, in particular, Angus McKie, who wrote and illustrated the original source for the story. Taken from Blu-ray, the film is in very bad shape and required several dozen steps and various processes to fully restore to the state it's in now. From the Heavy Metal movie released in 1981, this scene from "So Beautiful, So Dangerous" is my first in a series of restorations I'm doing. ![]()
